The Gift of Reading…

posted on 3 November 2008 | posted in Articles  | (0) Comments

From a pre-school age right the way through to adulthood, many of us enjoy the gift of reading, revelling in books, whether fact or fiction, sci-fi or realistic. Giving your child the gift of enjoying reading, whether alone or to you, aloud or silently, can be one of the best ways to ensure they get the most out of their education. Boys in particular are notoriously difficult to motivate into enjoying the simple pleasures of picking up a book and getting stuck in, but, if you kick start a reading campaign with your child from a young age, and try to bring the stories to life in a number of different ways; you’ll have a better chance of success.

Some kids will moan that books are ‘boring’, and believe that they could be having a better time playing on their games console, computer, or even just watching the TV. However, the interaction stories in particular encourage between a child and their imagination, it unsurpassable. In today’s modern world, with to many gadgets and gizmos to keep kids entertained – and quiet, nothing comes close to story time!
If you’re finding getting your child inspired a little tricky, then why not take one of your childhood favourites, and add a few props too. Whether that’s a cuddly toy to represent the main character, a dress up set so your child can make themselves look like the protagonist, or any number of interactive games that are in some way reminiscent of the adventures experienced in the story, this can be a great way of bringing together play time with story time – and make a positive association between the two in your child’s mind.
We’ve found a company, Cocoon Collection, who specialise in gifts for children including Storyboxes, which include both an age appropriate story book, and a host of goodies to represent various elements of the story too.
